Sight

ANOTHER SIGHT is a surreal fantasy adventure with steampunk elements set in 1899 towards the end of the Victoria era, in London. Built on heart, culture and character, ANOTHER SIGHT brings to life our two leading characters: Kit, a refreshingly bold teenager, who loses her sight after the under-construction London Underground tunnel she was exploring collapses, and Hodge – a mysterious red-furred cat – she meets in darkness. Together, they team up for an adventure through the unexpected, with Hodge an essential companion upon whom Kit will come to rely on. Kit and Hodge explore a surreal fantasy world both together and apart, using each of their unique talents to tackle environments and solve intriguing puzzles. Beneath London, in a world inspired by Neil Gaiman’s urban fantasy, Neverwhere, Kit and Hodge encounter a hidden society of the world’s greatest inventors and artistic minds such as Claude Monet, Jules Verne and other long-past cultural icons.

More and more games of late have begun exploring the notion of blindness. A seemingly paradoxical concept for a visual medium, it presents.

I’ve always been a big fan of adventure games be it point and click or the more modern platforming varieties. When I’m not deep in some game I set my sights to the world of literacy for other inspiring worlds to explore. So when gaming media merges both real world and fantasy elements in new ways much in the same way of works by Carroll and Gaiman, I’m interested. So when I got the chance to play Another Sight by Lunar Great Wall Studios on the Xbox One I couldn’t wait to dive in.Another Sight takes place in 1899’s London at the end of Victorian Era and follows the adventure of its two protagonists Kit and Hodge. Catherine Nightingale or “Kit” to everyone is a rather bold teenager that for much of the game is worried about getting back to her father after an accident in the London Underground separates them.

Kit however has her own challenges ahead as her eyesight is not as it once was.Kit’s purplish ethereal eyesight has become akin to that of some bats where she can see the world visualized by the sounds around her. As the train cue very early shows these moments are fleeting so she has to rely on other sources of noise to progress. Enter the mysterious cat Hodge who acts as Kit’s guide and companion for much of Another Sight’s fantastical story. This furry feline acts as a unique meowing beacon at the press of a button to help Kit navigate some treacherous landscapes.Another Sight at its core is very much a platformer mixed with puzzle solving so Kit being make jumps in darkened area for her is a must. This is where Another Sight’s gameplay really shines. Players are able to switch back and forth between Kit and Hodge to work together to get through each new challenge with their given strengths. As Kit will only move forward or jump when she’s comfortable with her surrounding moving Hodge to an adjacent platform and meowing will broaden Kit’s vision.

The beauty is that Hodge’s meowing can be triggered in either its worldview or Kit’s with the press of the Y Button.Actually getting to that adjacent platform or triggering something that acts as a beacon in Hodge’s place however isn’t as easy as it sounds. I have to say that solving these puzzles is easily my favorite element of Another Sight. Hodge can see the world in its natural state as well as climb up objects, scale walls and get through tight spaces much more freely than his human companion.

Though jumping isn’t your only obstacle as sometimes a plate may need to be pressed down by Hodge in one room before Kit can pull a lever in another to open a door. So even when separated there is no downtime in the gameplay’s pacing outside of story scenes. The biggest issue that I experienced in Another Sight however, as with other platformers, is jumping is not as precise as I’d like. Luckily it’s not so much of a problem with Kit but it’s rather tedious with Hodge at times. Now while you do have some control on the length of his horizontal jumps you often have to be pretty precise to not overshoot your target in my case. I’ve even ran into a few issues where Kit got stuck on ladders or Hodge falls into unescapable holes.

The evil within 2 release date. The Evil Within 2 Release Date The Evil Within 2 will launch on October 13 (Friday the 13th in case you are wondering) for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The Evil Within 2 Details.

These moments however were minimal and didn’t really detract too much from the experience but were kind of annoying. On the more entertaining side, Another Sight is full of engaging puzzles that while really clever at times are not overly taxing making them enjoyable as a whole. Some puzzles are not there to progress the story but to collect an entry in one of the title’s two collectible categories. You’ll find several of them naturally but others are off the beaten track and require triggering certain environmental elements to get access to them. In case you miss one you can go back through individual chapters to find the ones you missed after beating the game the first time. Each chapter actually shows missing collectibles with and empty diamond under the artwork so you don’t have to guess which chapter to look in.What I really enjoyed about Another Sight, besides its parallels to another blonde haired blueish dressed London youth and cheeky cat, is its integration of historical figures into its narrative.

Game

Through your journey you will encounter the greats like artists Monet and Debussy as well as more prominent figures in other areas of industry, spiritualism and literature with an actual surprise mixed in for good measure with Kit’s family. As several level designs showcase over the adventure there is the race to find an energy source known as the Node between real world rivals Tesla and Edison each with their own designs on the energy it contains.I have to say I love urban fantasy and Another Sight’s story is as wondrous in its woven intricacies as it is in its visual presentation.

Many of the individual levels are designed around one of the historical figures as you transition from one to the next. While the whole experience is magical in a down the rabbit hole kind of way, there is a nice blend of fantastical locales like an exotic garden or trippy floating platforms set to a warped backdrop to vast grand laboratories and warehouse filled with pipes and large electrical experiments. If you’re on the Xbox One X you actually have the option to play Another Sight in 4K which makes everything a bit more vibrant and clean especially in a few choice areas. Another Sight features hand-drawn motion animation and a few spots of CGI to tell its story whereas the rest of the gameplay is firmly done in 2.5 dimensional environments.

This is showcased predominantly as Kit and Hodge often operate on two different planes even though they seem to share the same platforms or walkways throughout the game. The puzzles within are really well designed to intricately fit with their levels in a largely seamless and natural way.Of course it wouldn’t be proper to not mention the music and voice acting especially when you’re actually presented with a little of Debussy’s Clair De Lune throughout parts of the game.

The music within Another Sight is beautifully melodic yet relevant to the time frame of the adventure. While the voice cast as a whole is well done its Martha Mackintosh’s portrayal of Kit that endears me to this game’s story. Even Hodge gets some flexibility in his meows depending on which skin you have equipped on him from the main menu like the tiger or robot skins. No matter which ending you choose the first time, Another Sight is full of charm, wonder and mystery that I would have no issues with playing its six hour or so campaign all over again. It’s cleverly designed character switching mechanics and puzzles fit perfectly at home with its pacing and narrative in a way that feels of something out of a storybook. You can’t help but feel a kinship with Kit and Hodge as you make your way through each level wanting to see what happens next and that I believe is Another Sight’s greatest strength.

If you love a wondrous adventure with equal measures of puzzle and charm then look no further than Another Sight for the Xbox One today.
