Rabbit Smashed On Tree

Rabbit Smashed On Tree

I planted about 350 Norway spruce last year.I lost about a hundred or so I'd guess to the drought, but those that survived have another problem. I don't have any pictures, but the coloration of those that survived is a very light or pale green. I'm wondering.is this normal? The new trees I've received this spring are a nice dark green. I'm just wondering is this typical of trees that are still recovering from last summers' drought and the winter?2nd issue.99% of the trees that survived have been browsed by something.I suspect rabbits, although I very seldom see any rabbits on my property. Plus, it's widespread.three different fields, even those by the road and in the middle of a field, not near any cover at all. The thing is.it seems that whatever did it didn't eat it.just clipped the limbs off and left them lying there.

Its very common for the spruce to look yellow the next spring. The first season is tough on them.

They will green up. The dead trees will have brown needles that fall off at the touch. When rabbits browse, there is a clean 45 degree cut. When deer browse it has a ripped off appearance.

Spruce are not typically browsed by deer or rabbits. But if you have a high deer density, that is whats happening. They are not crazy about them, but there browsing them a little. I went to one property this winter, with norways planted along a food plot. The deer browsed them right down.

Could dark plastic be causing excessive soil temps or mold underneath during the summer, or some other unnatural condition? I am also in the process of planting norway and blue spruce trees. The ones I have planted over the past 5 years will look light green to almost a yellow look but after an application of 10-10-10 fertilizer, they turn very dark green after a rain or two in the spring. I also had the problem of rabbits and deer.

I bought a spray that was for repelling most wild animals and did not have the problem again. I planted about a hundred pines near deer trails and sprayed each one lightly. The deer walk right past the trees and never touch them. After a few years when they are established, you will not have to spray the whole tree; just the central leader.
